Why Zlatan Ibrahimovic is like a Fine Wine

The self-proclaimed ”God” bagged himself a match-winning bicycle-kick goal for AC Milan at the weekend in their victory against Udinese. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a name that will go down in history in the football world, not only for his talent on the pitch but also for his egotistical confidence off it. After signing a one-year contract extension with the Italian club, the Milan striker has scored seven goals in four league games for his side who are currently top of the Serie A. At the age of 39, the all-time leading Swedish goalscorer is still proving that he can compete in one of Europe’s top leagues. On his day, the striker is unplayable. Zlatan is like a fine wine that gets better over time.

What makes Ibrahimovic stand out as a player?

The simple answer, his vintage entertainment.

Think back to 2012, Sweden host England in an International Friendly. Zlatan steps onto the pitch and immediately makes it his own. The Swedish striker scored four goals that night, including a memorable overhead kick which stunned the football world. Fast forward to 2020 and ”Ibra” is still making the headlines, most recently for scoring twice in a Man of the Match performance against Inter in the Milan Derby. One would wonder when the goalscoring machine will start to slow down, it certainly doesn't appear to be anytime soon.

Ibrahimovic started his professional career with Swedish side Malmö FF in 1999. In 2001, Zlatan joined Ajax FC, where the youngster first became known in the football world. From there, Ibrahimovic would join top European clubs such as Juventus (2004-2006), Inter (2006-2009) Barcelona (2009-2011), AC Milan (2010-2012), PSG (2012-2016) and Manchester United (2016-2018). The striker has scored everywhere he went. During his stint at MLS side LA Galaxy, Ibrahimovic scored 53 goals in 58 games. He called himself ”a Ferrari among Fiats” in the league. This self-confidence and arrogance are what makes Zlatan the player he is today, he goes into each match believing he will score goals and help his side to victory.

The 39-year-old has hinted at a return to his Swedish national side on social media in recent days with the caption ”long time no see” with Ibra wearing the Swedish jersey. The countries veteran talisman retired back in 2016 after they were knocked out of the European Championships. The record goalscorer has netted 62 goals in 116 appearances for his country. No doubt Ibra could still offer firepower for his National team today as they have struggled to replace him since he left.

”It’s Zlatan-Style” as said from Ibrahimovic is a style like no other. When ”Ibra” does hang up the boots, we will remember how brilliant a player he was. Zlatan was a professional that would get you off your seat when watching him play, he could produce magic on the pitch in a matter of seconds. Not many professionals in the history of the game can say they are still producing on the pitch heading for the age of 40 in one of Europe’s top leagues. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Europes best fine wine.
